The Creswick Men's Friendship Shed has celebrated 25 years of fostering friendship, connection and community spirit, with members, supporters and special guests gathering recently to mark the milestone.
Established in September 2001 through the support of Hepburn Community Health, now Central Highlands Rural Health (CHRH), the Shed was among the first five men's sheds established in Victoria and one of the earliest in the world. What began as local men meeting for a cuppa to address social isolation has grown into a thriving community organisation that has positively impacted the lives of countless people across the region.
The 25th anniversary celebration, held on 15 September, brought together 41 attendees, including current and former members, community leaders and representatives from the Victorian and Australian Men's Shed Associations. Guests also included researcher and author Barry Golding, Member for Ripon Martha Haylett MP and Hepburn Shire Council Positive Ageing Officer Eddie Wyman.
CHRH Deputy CEO Phil Catterson said the Shed's contribution to community wellbeing over the past quarter century had been significant.
"One of the biggest challenges for many people, particularly as they get older, is social isolation. The Shed provides a place where people can connect, build friendships, share skills and support one another, and that has enormous benefits for both physical and mental health," Mr Catterson said.
"A big shout out to our CHRH Health Promotion team who support the Men’s Shed and have become part of the fabric of the place, the men and women of the shed greatly enjoy their involvement and support," Mr Catterson added.
Today, the Shed operates from its home beneath the pine trees on Bridge Street, providing opportunities for members to learn new skills, contribute to community projects and strengthen community connections. The anniversary celebration recognised the dedication of past and present members whose commitment has helped shape the Shed into the valued community asset it is today.
A highlight of the event was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque marking the Shed's 25-year journey. Past and present members who attended also received special anniversary caps to recognise their contribution.
The event was proudly supported by CHRH, which continues to serve as the Shed's auspice organisation, and was assisted through a Hepburn Shire Council Community Events Grant. As the Creswick Men's Friendship Shed looks to the future, members remain committed to building on the strong foundations established over the past 25 years, ensuring the Shed continues to be a welcoming place of friendship, support and belonging for many years to come.
