Kyneton Health’s Macedon Ranges Community Nursing team is pleased to be the recipient of the proceeds from the upcoming Mount Macedon Realty: Wooling Hill Run 2022.
The event hosts of next month’s Mount Macedon Realty: Wooling Hill Run 2022, Troy and Liddy Upfield, are revved up to raise $60,000 to buy a new van for the Macedon Ranges Specialist Palliative Care in the home service.
The van will be used to transport essential equipment, including electrical hospital beds and air mattresses, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids to and from clients’ homes to enable specialist community nursing staff to provide the best end-of-life care and support in the home for clients and their carers across the Macedon Ranges Shire.
When someone has a life-limiting or terminal illness, specialised palliative care can help them to improve and sustain the quality of their life by providing expertise to manage their symptoms and support their emotional, cultural, social and spiritual needs. Palliative care also supports the person’s carer, and this support can be over several months, weeks or days. While some choose and receive palliative care in a residential aged care facility, hospice, or hospital, most people prefer to remain at home. The community nurses work closely with the client’s GP and a range of allied health professionals to provide holistic care in the home seven days a week with after-hours support from the hospital staff.
Robert Read, whose wife Betty died peacefully at home in the care of the palliative care nursing team, could not speak more highly of their professionalism, compassion, and support.
“They were here every day for two months. They bought everything she needed to be comfortable and were very responsive to her changing needs,” Robert said. “We could not have had better care anywhere else in Victoria.”
Maree Cuddihy, CEO, Central Highlands Rural Health said, “A fit-for-purpose van packed with equipment ready to go when needed will make a huge difference to our clients and their carers. We encourage people of all ages and abilities to sign up for this year’s Mount Macedon Realty: Wooling Hill Run 2022. Get your family, friends or colleagues to enter a team with you or sponsor your participation. We know that health care matters to everyone, and we are incredibly grateful to Troy and Liddy Upfield and Lisa Fowler for rallying the community to support the wellbeing of patients at Kyneton Health.”
Last year’s event raised $13,000 to purchase a “cuddle bed” for Kyneton Health’s palliative care suite that allows family and friends to provide physical comfort to a loved one during end-of-life.
